Tíjola was indispensible for the GSSR as it had a supply of good, relatively soft water only a kilometre away due to huge efforts by the company to resolve the issue of lime in the locomotives' boilers. The water was pumped to storage tanks at the station for the purpose of refilling the locomotives' tanks. Additionally, there was a pipe sending water to Zurgena Station with refilling points at Fines-Olula, Cantoria and Zurgena for the same purpose. Actually 1.2km from Tíjola.
